21,000 Days: Why It’s Time to Stop Playing It Safe

June 26, 2024

Time, they say, waits for no one. And yet, how often do we find ourselves playing it safe, sticking to the script that society has written for us? We’re groomed to follow a linear path—graduate, work, retire—and discouraged from veering off this pre-approved track. But life isn’t linear; it’s a splendidly chaotic dance of choices and changes.

Consider a friend of mine, a brilliant spark of a human who spent a decade chasing a medical degree only to discover that his heart beat not in the cadence of traditional medicine, but to a different, wilder drum. He isn’t alone. Everywhere, there are people waking up to the realization that the path they’re on doesn’t align with their soul’s calling.

Breaking Free from Societal Expectations

Why does society often shame those who dare to step off the beaten path? Why are we labeled as failures or flighty for daring to admit that our desires have evolved? This fear of judgment keeps too many of us caged in careers and lives that drain rather than fill us up.

Here’s the disruptive truth: changing your mind is a radical act of courage. It’s a declaration that your happiness is paramount, that you are not a static character but a dynamic protagonist in your own life. Every day brings us closer to the finite number of 21,000 days that we might get after our formative years. Every day is a chance to pivot, to choose joy and authenticity.

I urge you to challenge the narrative. Don’t let your life be something that simply happens to you. Seize it with both hands, reroute it, shake it up! It’s okay to redefine your purpose. It’s okay to admit that what you once wanted isn’t what you want now.

Embracing Growth and Evolution

Let’s normalize growth. Let’s celebrate evolution. And let’s remember that life is too precious to spend at war with your true self. After all, when you look back at your life, it will be the moments you chose bravery over safety that will shine the brightest.

Remember: Your life, your rules. Let’s play this wild game of life by our own standards. Be fearless. Be free. Change, grow, disrupt. Because when it comes down to it, isn’t that what life is all about?
