Being Stretched

August 21, 2024

Tuning in from Nosara, Costa Rica.

I’ve finally discovered why yoga resonates with me so deeply and how it reflects life in its entirety. Over the past two weeks, I’ve immersed myself in yoga and Pilates each morning and evening. Every year for the last three years, I come down here to be with Hiro. It’s Andy’s month with him, and if I want to see him, I just have to go where he is. Andy heads to Nosara every summer, so naturally, I find myself here too :-) It’s become this beautiful ritual of resetting, contemplating, and shedding what doesn’t serve me, while also dreaming, digging deep, and creating. A perfect solo journey into my heart and creative soul, and I get to see Hiro every day.

But, surprise! As the universe would have it, 20 friends from around the country are visiting here at the exact same time. It’s been a divine balance of solo quiet time, work time, family time, and community time, with heaps of yoga and Pilates in between :-)

Here’s why yoga speaks to me:
Yoga is this amazing practice that connects the body, breath, and spirit. Breathing into the discomfort of a stretch until that breakthrough moment feels so empowering. That breakthrough—when the pain turns into an amazing sensation—is when we realize we can go further than we ever imagined. This is what it’s all about—breathing through pain, stretching past limits, and watching the transformation from pain to pure bliss. It’s the ultimate training ground for life.

I also realized there’s a necessary integration period. Sometimes we need to pause, let the stretch settle, and catch up with our breath.

And sometimes, we hit our actual limits. We’ve gone as far as we can with a stretch, and pushing further could mean breaking something :-) That’s when it’s about exploring new stretches and ways of growth.
Some stretches can create tears if we push too far. So, knowing our body’s true capacity and respecting our boundaries is just as crucial as pushing through pain and reaching that next level.

Yoga is the practice of refining our self-awareness. Knowing we can stretch ourselves further is as magical as understanding our boundaries.

I’m definitely going to keep up my yoga practice when I return home.
