On Generative Friendship: Why Entrepreneurs Need a Solid Friend Group

November 2, 2023

Hey there, beautiful souls! 🌟

One of the most transformative pieces of advice I’ve ever received, and now passionately share, is the importance of community for entrepreneurs and business leaders. It’s not just about networking or making connections for the sake of business. It’s about creating your friend group—a deep, solid group of friends that show up for you, that you serve, and in turn, serve you.

I want to tell a quick story that encapsulates the essence of what I mean. After an exhilarating yet exhausting trip, I landed back home, having slept a mere 3 hours. My body ached for rest, my mind was foggy, and all I wanted was to dive into my bed. But that evening was a dear friend’s 40th birthday. The thought of missing it never crossed my mind. I got ready and went. I showed up. Not because I wanted a favor in return or because I wanted them to show up for me someday. I did it because being there, in that moment, with people I care about, fills up my cup and brings me an energy that’s unparalleled.

This is what I call “generative friendship.” It’s a bond that goes beyond the superficial. It’s about giving without expecting, showing up not because of obligation, but because of the genuine joy and energy it brings. It’s about understanding that as entrepreneurs, while our ventures might fuel our purpose, it’s these relationships that fuel our soul.

In the whirlwind journey of entrepreneurship, where highs are ecstatic and lows can be soul-crushing, having a community that stands by you, that understands your struggles, and celebrates your successes is invaluable. They become your sounding board, your cheerleaders, and sometimes, your harshest critics—all rolled into one.

So, to all the budding entrepreneurs and seasoned business leaders out there, if there’s one piece of advice I’d emphasize, it’s this: Invest in your community. Cultivate those generative friendships. Because at the end of the day, while businesses may come and go, it’s these relationships that stand the test of time, bringing warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.

Stay connected, stay loved, and always show up. 🌟

Xoxo,
Miki
